Treatment of Distal Tarsal Osteoarthritis Using 3-Drill Tract Technique in 36 Horses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Arthrodesis of the distal tarsal joints can be achieved using the 3-drill tract technique for treatment of bone spavin with a favorable prognosis for return to previous levels of performance. Progression of osteoarthritis to involve the proximal intertarsal or tarsocrural joints did not occur, and postoperative complications were uncommon. No clinical, radiographic, or surgical variables were beneficial in predicting clinical outcome. Highlights of recent clinically relevant papers
L. Lamas and colleagues from the UK have recently published the results of their study on the use of ethanol in the treatment of distal tarsal osteoarthritis (Lamas et al. 2012). Intra-articular ethanol has been described to promote distal tarsal joint ankylosis. Its use and results in clinical cases affected by osteoarthritis (OA) have not been reported. This study was performed to describe an...
متن کاملChemical arthrodesis of the distal tarsal joints using sodium monoiodoacetate in 104 horses.
OBJECTIVE To evaluate chemical arthrodesis using sodium monoiodoacetate for treatment of degenerative joint disease of the tarsometatarsal and distal intertarsal joints. DESIGN Retrospective clinical study. METHOD Horses were diagnosed with degenerative joint disease of one or more of the tarsometatarsal or distal intertarsal joints based on history, lameness examination, radiographic findi...
متن کاملA retrospective study of radiographic abnormalities in the repositories for Thoroughbreds at yearling sales in Japan
This study aimed to evaluate whether radiographic abnormalities at yearling sales were associated with the failure to start racing at 2-3 years of age. Radiographic abnormalities in the carpal (n=852), tarsal (n=976), metacarpophalangeal (n=1,055), and metatarsophalangeal joints (n=1,031) from 1,082 horses, recorded at yearling sale, were reviewed. Eighty-two horses (7.6%) failed to start racin...
متن کاملCentral tarsal bone fractures in horses not used for racing: Computed tomographic configuration and long-term outcome of lag screw fixation.
REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY There are no reports on the configuration of equine central tarsal bone fractures based on cross-sectional imaging and clinical and radiographic long-term outcome after internal fixation. OBJECTIVES To report clinical, radiographic and computed tomographic findings of equine central tarsal bone fractures and to evaluate the long-term outcome of internal fixation. ...
متن کاملUse of sodium monoiodoacetate to fuse the distal hock joints in horses.
Intra-articular injection of sodium monoiodoacetate (MIA) was investigated as an agent for chemical arthrodesis of the distal hock joints in the horse. Five horses diagnosed with either spavin (three horses), a small tarsal bone fracture or a failed surgical arthrodesis, had 150 mg of MIA injected into the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joint of the affected hock(s). Eight joints were treated in the fiv...
